5 Great Reasons to Ride Outside

Riding a bike burns calories. Period. But it can also be so enjoyable that you’ll forget about that part. Here are five ways to make riding outside unbeatable:

1. GATHER YOUR GANG

Riding in a group is safer and more fun. Plan a day to commute or gallery-hop together. If your workout is the priority, then find a group ride (start by asking at your local bike shops for ride info). Keeping up with the pack can be challenging but also makes you feel like a superhero!

2. ROCK YOUR TUNES

I know, I know, playing music in public is generally a no-no. But as long as you’re staying in-motion, you’re only subjecting the world to your Katy Perry/Major Lazer mashup for a few seconds as you pass by. Besides, it’s a great way to announce your presence. 3. REMEMBER: IT’S THE DESTINATION, NOT THE JOURNEY

Oh, wait, I mean, pick a great place to ride to! It can be easy to bail on long rides if you don’t have a destination worthy of the miles. Pick a great spot you’ve always wanted to go, and challenge yourself to ride there! The beach is always my go-to. But climbing mountains is another way to get a killer workout with a big pay-off.

4. TEST OUT NEW GEAR

A handlebar bag filled with snacks. A new kit. Fatter tires. Any of these things can change your whole experience on a ride. This doesn’t necessarily mean you have to break the bank. Many bike shops have demo days where you can ride a fancy new whip for free!

5. MAKE IT A MULTI-DAY ADVENTURE

Cycling from one place to another can make you feel empowered. Like, “I’m in a whole new city/place and I got here using my legs!” You’ll also get to take in the views and the food along the way. Your idea of a vacation will never be the same.
